OHM's Backup Power Solutions Keep The Lights On

Home battery backup systems maximize protection against power outages in Northern California. At OHM Solar Solutions, we install home battery systems sized and configured for your needs.

These efficiently collect power generated by the solar array on your roof to provide continuous power at night or when the grid is offline.

How Home Battery Backup Works

Home battery backup refers to a system that uses stored energy to supply your home with electricity when necessary. It may meet part or all of your electrical needs.

Solar cells collect energy from sunlight and convert it into electrical current. An inverter turns direct current (DC) into alternating current (AC) to supply household circuits and power appliances and devices. Electricity not immediately used charges the battery, so you have power when solar panels aren't generating electricity.

When paired with a transfer switch, the battery can automatically start supplying electricity to your home when an outage is detected. The switch instantly disconnects your circuits from utility lines. There may be no interruption in power, so lights and appliances stay on.

What Can A Home Battery Power?

Residential solar batteries can be designed and configured to power just about anything, if they have the capacity and your solar panels produce sufficient output.

A home battery backup can also supply power to medical devices like CPAP machines and oxygen concentrators.

Whole-Home Versus Essential-Load Backup

A solar battery captures and stores electrical energy. Battery storage refers to the physical hardware itself, while home battery backup is any residential system that uses stored battery power. Two terms to know:

What Size Battery Backup Do You Need?

The duration that a battery can supply electricity depends on the individual unit's capacity. In theory, a 10 kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery with a 1 kilowatt load can run for 10 hours. But it's more complicated than that, as different appliances draw different wattages. Extremely high or low temperatures, a large number of usage cycles, and a lack of maintenance can shorten the amount of time a battery lasts.

To size your whole home battery, first you need to calculate the total power load by adding up the ratings of all your lights and appliances. Here are a few examples:

Outage length is another consideration. The battery must supply enough power to last for the duration of a blackout, so power consumption must be multiplied by the length of time you expect to need battery backup, which can range from a few hours to several weeks.
